One of my fondest recollections is of peddling the long slow upgrade from the Spring House to the Southeast Light in order to coast back down, the dazzling blue Atlantic to my right and the ocean breeze whipping by. I found a regular 10-speed bike, which cost $20 for two days, more than adequate for even the steepest hills.
Because of this concern, the number of mopeds for rent has been reduced to 250, available at five authorized outlets. For longer distances, it is preferable to use taxis or rent a bicycle or moped.īut islanders warn that mopeds have caused many accidents when driven carelessly.

While one cannot explore the entire island by foot in a day or two, a visitor with a few days to spend can meander around many of the historical and natural attractions in a series of walking tours. Much of the rest of the island is also easily explored on foot, from Settler's Rock on the northern end, marking the spot where the first settlers came ashore in 1661, to Mohegan Bluffs on the southern end, where the last of a Mohegan raiding party met a grisly fate at the hands of the local Manisees in 1590.

Today, everyone swims for free everywhere on the island. From there it is another 15- or 20-minute walk along the Atlantic to the pebbly sands of Crescent Beach and, just beyond, Scotch Beach, where bathers too penurious to pay for using the private bathhouse once swam free. From the Spring House, the 1661 Inn or the Manisses, three of Block Island's leading hotels, it is a 10-minute stroll to Old Harbor. In the harbor, boxy ferries chug in and out, and yachts and sailboats with bobbing masts line a wharf.īlock Island has a distinctly human scale, and touring it by car takes little more than an hour. (There is not even a pharmacy prescription drugs must be flown over from the mainland.) Overhead telephone wires complete the antique look, and it is the cars that seem somehow out of place.

Though there are a few bows to the tourist trade - T-shirt stores and gift shops and kite makers and even a movie house - it is hardly a shopper's mecca. There is nary a fast food chain or designer boutique in sight.

Like the steamer tourists of the past, today's visitors spend their days bathing and picnicking at the sea beaches and some of the 200 inland ponds, exploring the bayberry dunes and Indian sites or otherwise steeping themselves in the island's lore and legends, cycling, sailing, kite-flying, dining sumptuously on the day's catch or just curling up with a novel on the veranda of a gingerbread Victorian hotel. Livermore wrote in 1877 in his ''History of Block Island,'' and the characterization is still apt more than a century later. ''Innocent, healthful amusements are common here,'' the Rev. The porkchop-shaped island, seven miles long by three-and-a-half miles wide, is a place where the nightly entertainment runs to the evening meal and a harborside stroll in the sea breeze, where excursions are built around a visit to a lighthouse or a Colonial cemetery, and where jaded refugees from the mainland stop to marvel at a roadside vegetable stand with the trusting legend: ''Prices on board. Anchored in the Atlantic off the Rhode Island coast 14 miles east of the tip of Long Island's Montauk Point, this outpost of New England is the kind of wholesome, old-fashioned resort one rarely finds anymore. Mopeds have long since displaced the oxcarts, and guests no longer take the waters at the 133-year-old Spring House, but in many other respects Block Island remains a time warp of 19th-century vacation pleasures.
